There may very well be no hotter topic at the moment than artificial intelligence. From using chatbots to generating computer art, artificial intelligence is changing everything. But what exactly is it? 

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines or computer systems, enabling them to perform tasks that typically require human thinking such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, adapting to new situations, and more. AI technologies aim to replicate or augment human intelligence to automate tasks, make predictions, and provide insights across various domains.

The foundation for AI was laid in the 1950s when researchers began developing computer programs that could perform tasks that required human intelligence, such as solving mathematical problems and playing chess. 

The 1960s saw some early AI successes, including the development of the first computer program capable of simulating human conversation (ELIZA) and the development of the "Logic Theorist," which could prove mathematical theorems. Then, expert systems, which encoded human knowledge to solve specific problems, gained popularity in the 1980s and the 1990s. 

The 2000s brought access to massive amounts of data, enabling the training of more powerful machine learning models. But things really got going in the 2010s with the development of knowledge-based systems and the emergence of rule-based expert systems. AI has become increasingly integrated into everyday life, with applications like virtual assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa), recommendation systems (e.g., Netflix), and self-driving cars making headlines. Companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon invested heavily in AI research and development, and now we’re here: AI is everywhere.

Artificial intelligence applications

There are so many applications of AI that it’s impossible to list them all. However, here are some prominent categories that are currently using AI with example use cases:

  • Natural language processing (NLP): Chatbots and virtual assistants, sentiment analysis, language translation, text generation
  • Machine learning and predictive analytics: Credit scoring, stock market forecasting, healthcare diagnostics

That’s just the smallest taste of what AI can do. There’s a temptation to talk about AI in the future tense—what it can do—but the above use cases don’t exist in a future state: these are current uses. The truth is that you’re currently utilizing AI in your daily life in ways you may not even realize. Further, it’s being used for you, from generating a credit score to serving up fresh music mixes based on your preferred artists.
