What is the platform experience canvas?

If you use the Platform Design Toolkit, you’ll need this handy template to complete step seven. Before you use the platform experience canvas, you’ll have already completed the Strategic Design phase—this is your chance to synthesize the core value propositions you decided on there.

Specifically, the platform experience canvas template helps you assemble the elements that you put on the transactions board and the learning engine canvas. You also get the chance to reflect on what you’ll need to do to make this experience happen and what value the experience gives your organization.

Ways to use the platform experience canvas

This template’s purpose is to help you consolidate your previous work in the Platform Design Toolkit—you’ll have already made a lot of insights, but you need to put them together.

As you build your platform experience, you’ll need three components:

  • The services that the Platform Owner provides as part of the learning engine
  • The transactions that happen between different parts of the ecosystem, such as between different teams in your organization or between a team and a supplier
  • The other elements that impact the experience, such as support systems or functionalities

This is a lot of data to keep in mind as you build your platform experience, so use this template to help you keep it under control.

How to use the platform experience canvas template in Lucidspark

To use the template, start by naming the experience. To do this, you’ll choose the core identity whose point of view you’ll take. After that, you can use the canvas freely to brainstorm and move information around.

As you work, you’ll identify entity-to-entity and platform-to-entity interactions. Use different colors of sticky notes for these so you can view them at a glance. You can also move the sticky notes around easily to find the best flow.

At the very end, explore the business model so you have all the information you need to make good decisions. The end result will give you a tangible visual representation of your platform strategy. Use Lucidspark to share it with other stakeholders and get everyone on board.
